What if someone asked you to help transform a $1.9 trillion dollar industry for consumers? For me, it was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up. Rebuilding an experience that impacts millions of people every year is a technical challenge that doesn’t come up very often, if ever. Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest milestones in a person’s lifetime, and, at Opendoor, we are building solutions to help everyone achieve homeownership.
It takes a team of problem solvers and builders who can reduce complex processes into a seamless and delightful customer experience. And it requires an entrepreneurial mindset from individuals who want to change the status quo.
During this past year of record growth for Opendoor, we’ve hired more than 1,000 new team members—many in our engineering organizations who are taking on these challenges—and we plan to scale our entire Opendoor team even further in the coming years. As part of this growth, we’re excited to announce that Opendoor is expanding technical hiring into Canada. Our new teammates will become part of the talented communities created from our recent additions of teams from Pro.com and Skylight, a Canadian-founded company where I was the Chief Technology Officer.
Over the next several years, we plan to hire nearly 100 people for our engineering product development team in Canada—starting with Toronto, one of the fastest growing tech hubs in North America. Toronto has incredible tech talent, particularly front-end and back-end engineers and data scientists—many who have learned from some of the best tech schools in the world and honed their skills and expertise at innovative startups.
Our teams in Canada will be building on the financial platforms, pricing systems and technology infrastructure that are integral to Opendoor’s operations. And more importantly, they’ll be part of creating the first digital one-stop shop for buying and selling a home.
Throughout our expansion, we’ll work with Toronto Global, a team of experienced business advisors assisting global businesses to expand into the Toronto region, as well as the Trade Commissioner and Ontario Senior Economic Officer based in the Consulate of Canada in San Francisco. We look forward to their support as we grow our teams.
“The world’s most innovative technologies and companies thrive in Ontario,” said Vic Fedeli, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “We offer a high quality of life, highly skilled talent pool, strong and growing innovation sector and the support that can help businesses thrive. We’re thrilled to welcome Opendoor to Ontario with promises to help us unlock more potential, create new opportunities and forge new partnerships.”
We’ve built a culture at Opendoor that is laser-focused on transforming our customers’ experience. We push ourselves, and we push each other to be better at our jobs every day. We are looking forward to growing our teams in Canada with similarly-minded individuals who want to make the real estate experience simple, certain, fast and trusted for buyers and sellers.
“We thank Opendoor for investing in our world-renowned technology sector and for creating jobs for our talented workforce,” said Toronto Mayor John Tory.
Opendoor engineers are redefining an industry that traditionally had no technology, and they are setting the standard for the future. And, we’re just getting started. Come join our team—check out our open positions in Canada and apply today. We hope to virtually meet you soon.
